Scholarship checks out at NMC
The CNMI scholarship office will be distributing Educational Assistance Program checks at the Northern Marianas College Student Center today and tomorrow, from 9am to 3pm.
Over 300 NMC students will be receiving an average of $2,100 for the semester covering August through December.
With the approval of NMC president Antonio V. Deleon Guerrero, the college granted the students’ request to allow them to directly receive and manage their own CNMI scholarship money.
“In the past the Scholarship Office issued the checks to NMC and the remainder goes back to the students. This time, Tony [Deleon Guerrero] feels that the students are responsible so he requested to have the checks issued to them,” said CNMI Scholarship Advisory Board chair Roman Benavente.
Despite receiving the Federal Pell grant assistance and EAP, scholarship recipients are required to use their money for educational purposes.
“The CNMI is helping the students. The first priority is to assist them with their education,” said CNMI scholarship administrator Melissa Guajardo.
Staff from the Finance Department and the bookstore will be on hand to collect students’ payments for their Fall 2004 outstanding tuition fees and book charges.
Students are required to bring a valid identification card in order to receive their checks. To prevent any confusion in tuition and book charges, students are requested to have on hand their registration forms and charged invoices from the bookstore.
According to Guajardo, students who have not submitted their memorandum agreement can complete it in the student center before receiving their checks.
“We will also have Lyn Duenas from the Scholarship Office [present] to notarize any pending memorandum agreement,” she added.
Scholarship recipients are urged to make their payments after receiving their EAP checks to ensure that their outstanding balances are cleared by the end of the Fall 2004 semester.
“Those with outstanding balances will not be allowed to register for the Spring 2005 semester,” said Deleon Guerrero. (Cassie DLG Fejeran)
