CNMI to hold Preparedness Week this September
As the nation recalls the 9/11 terrorist attacks exactly three years ago, the CNMI is planning to hold an awareness campaign this month through the declaration of CNMI Preparedness Week.
Emergency Management Office director Rudolfo Pua said the government is planning activities for the event, which would be scheduled possibly from Sept. 20 to 24.
To date, the EMO has been focused on responding to disasters, following the onslaught of two supertyphoons and a tropical storm in the Commonwealth recently. It said no special activity to recall the 9/11 event was slated today.
Pua said the EMO is finalizing a draft proclamation that would be signed by Gov. Juan N. Babauta to officially declare the CNMI Preparedness Week sometime this month.
During that week, Pua said EMO and other government agencies involved in emergency response would visit schools to demonstrate response to terrorist attack scenarios. He said the EMO is also planning an exhibit displaying response equipment.
The CNMI has worked on strategy development to enhance its preparedness to potential terrorist attacks.
Local emergency responders have been undergoing training from various federal agencies—including the Homeland Security Department—to improve preparedness.
