The Northern Marianas College-Tinian Campus has initiated a new program that would enable individuals who, for one reason or another were not able to finish their high school education, to finally get their diplomas.

Although the program has been in place since 1997, this is the first time that it has been offered on Tinian. Prior to that, GED courses were being offered.

To be eligible, applicants must be 17 years or older, have been out of school for at least six months, and a U.S. citizen, CNMI resident, FAS citizen or non-alien immediate relative. International students may also enroll with proper documentation.

According to program coordinator Maria Agoun, approximately 60 prospective graduates filled the room at the NMC campus to register. This may lead the way to having the first NMC graduation on the island of Tinian.

NMC Board of Regents chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds was on hand not only to congratulate those who enrolled but also to motivate them in their attendance, encouraging them to keep going to class.

The Tinian High School classrooms are being made available for the students’ use.

Joey C. Charfauros of the Tinian Mayor’s Office said the prospect for all the students in this program continuing their education after graduation “is of course promising, with the continued motivation that they have shown.”

He gave thanks to NMC Campus Administrator Jim Wedding; NMC Adult Basic Education director Fe Calixterio; Elsie Cabrera for sharing the vision to have this program on Tinian; and to the staff and faculty of NMC and Tinian High School. (PR)
