The Senate has requested Gov. Juan N. Babauta to facilitate the urgent release of tax rebates and refunds of the CNMI’s Army reservists who are now in Hawaii in preparation for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan.

All nine senators introduced and approved Senate Resolution 14-27, which asked Babauta to instruct the Finance Department to immediately release the rebates and refunds of the CNMI’s reservists who were deployed to active duty.

Scores of reservists left the CNMI sometime in August to begin intensive military training before their one-year deployment.

The Senate made the request amid the perennial delayed release of tax rebates and refunds in the past years. The release of tax year 2003 rebates follows the completion of the release of rebates for tax year 2002 in Aug. 2004.

“The members of the E Company [CNMI reservists] in the very near future will be allowed one more opportunity in Hawaii for an extended visit with their families,” the resolution stated. “Many members’ families reside in the Commonwealth and will need to travel to Hawaii.”

According to the senators, the family members could use the rebate payments to defray the cost of traveling to Hawaii and visiting the reservists.
