The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has announced an emergency power outage that will affect certain areas in Garapan tomorrow.

Areas from the fire station up to Tony Roma’s Restaurant and Saipan Sunset Cruise on Garapan Beach Road, and the entire Garapan Pedestrian Mall project area will experience the outage from 8am to 4pm.

A power interruption that will last for 15 to 30 minutes will also be experienced at American Memorial Park, Hotel Street and First Street, and Garapan Beach Road from Winchell’s to the Microl intersection.

Both traffic lights at the DFS Galleria and Microl areas will be off-line for 15 to 30 minutes.

“This emergency outage is for CUC to start setting the underground raiser cable to convert the overhead distribution system to underground distribution system for the Garapan…Revitalization Pedestrian Mall Project,” CUC said in an advisory.

The utility corporation said the power outage is necessary to ensure the safety of its crew, as it is extremely dangerous to work on energized lines.

“CUC requests the cooperation and patience from people driving and residing in these areas while the work is [being] completed,” Lore said.

The Garapan area receives power from Feeder 2, which generates power for 650 CUC customers. Aside from Garapan business district, Feeder 2 covers Puerto Rico, Chalan Laulau down to Quartermaster to the San Jose traffic light on Beach Road.
