Sen. Pete Reyes and Pacific Publication and Printing, Inc. general manager Edgardo “Puy” Macario carded the best scores in their respective divisions to win the Fil-Taga Golfers Association Ace of the Month Tournament held last Sunday at the Kingfisher Golf Links.

Reyes took time off from his duties at the legislature and fired a net score of 4-under 68 to win A Flight. He finished tied with eventual runners up George Sablan and Mando Guban but took home the title after edging Sablan in a scorecard tiebreak.

Gil Faller actually had the morning’s best round of golf, but had to cede the monthly championship after winning the August edition of the monthly tournament.

A 13-handicapper, Faller wound up with a gross score of 79. Reyes, meanwhile, was just two shots off, finishing with a gross of 81. Sablan, a 14-handicapper, had an 82, while Guban matched Reyes’ 81.

Lito Mendoza and Albert Pajarillaga round up the top six players for September after shooting identical net scores of 3-under 69s. Mendoza scored birdies and pars in bunches and finished with a 77 gross, while Pajarillaga scored an 84.

Douglas Puckett (71), James Lin (72), Will Maui (72), and Rey Ferraz (72) made up the top 10 in A Flight for September.

Macario, for his part, saw his months of hard work on the firing range finally pay off after winning B Flight. Macario shot a net score of 1-over 73 but had to beat second place Greg De Torres in another scorecard tiebreak to win the division.

Don Dolenec captured third place with a net score of 4-over 76, while Nono Bostre (76), Jun “Tiger” Dela Cruz (77), Mike Lamoureux (77), and Glenna Palacios (80) round up the top 10.

Domeng Cariaso (67), Father Manny Corcuera (70), and Nestor Siruelo (71) all finished with better scores than Macario during the round but have already won B Flight this year.

Winners of the monthly tournament in the A and B flights automatically qualify for the Fil-Taga Golfer of the Year Tournament.

The winners of the Fil-Taga ace this year are: Ralph Yumul (January) and his father Jess (February), William Retardo (A Flight, March), Ted Malaran (B Flight, March), Harry Kang (A Flight, April), Glenna Palacios (B Flight, April), Albert Pajarillaga (A Flight, May) and Nestor Siruelo (B Flight, May), Joe Miranda (A Flight, June), Father Manny Corcuera (B Flight, June), Rey Ferraz (A Flight, July), Sandy Palon (B Flight, July), Gil Faller (A Flight, August), and Domeng Cariaso (B Flight, August).

Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.

A Fil-Taga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
