Basketball and bowling don’t have much in common save for the pine and maple wood used in both sports’ playing surfaces.

But local sports had equal doses of both basketball and bowling last week.

The ongoing 2004 Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League provided much of the hard court action during the weekdays, while the countdown to the finals of the 2004 UFO-San Miguel Cup kicked off last Sept. 18.

The Pepsi King of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament also held its monthly competition last Sept. 19 and 20 at the Saipan Bowling Center. The big winners were Rusty Musca and Becky Reyes, who took home the championships of the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

Friday evening also saw Saipan’s 10-man delegation to the 18th Asian Intercity Bowling Championships leave for Shah Alam, Malaysia. Members of the team are Mark Halstead, Robert Talavera, Dannie Robles, John Santos, Simon Manacop, Frank Sablan, Joe Sablan, and Mike Guirey. Jerry Tan also served as head of the delegation, while Ross Zapanta is team manager.

Other highlights from last week were the start of the 2004 Commonwealth Football League at the CPA Airport Field, continuation of Rocball at Marianas High School, the holding of the inaugural All Schools Fall Island Relay, and the September Kids TRYathlon.
