As part of Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, the Department of Public Safety Traffic Section will again implement its Designated Driver program this December in to promote road safety during the holiday season.

According to 3D vice chair Rose Ada-Hocog, the Designated Drivers program provides a means of transportation for intoxicated individuals. Instead of traveling while intoxicated, individuals may contact the Traffic Section and will be provided a driver who will bring them home.

The program is intended to lower traffic-related accidents as well as bring to zero the number of traffic fatalities.

Other events planned for the month include a mini-fair highlighted with skit performances by students and educational visits to schools regarding drunk and drugged driving.

Traffic related accidents have been on the rise this year, with a total of 2,142 incidents recorded from January to August. The number is 4.3 percent higher when compared with the same period last year, which amounted to 2,053 accidents.

Also, a total of 254 DUI arrests have been recorded from January to September this year.

Those interested in taking part in the program are encouraged to contact Rose Ada-Hocog or Sgt. Sylvan Rangamar at 664-9084/5/6.
