Flush It! and Bend It still perfect
Thirteen teams have played a combined 36 games thus far in the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League, but only Flush It! and Bend It Like Megan have managed to escape unscathed on the beach volleyball court at the Pacific Islands Club.
Both squads easily dispatched their competition Tuesday night to improve their records to 5-0, and at the rate they are going, their head-to-head match up on Thursday, Nov. 11, will be a battle for the top spot in the league.
Before the teams could think about their date to the sand prom, they have to face worthy opponents. Bend It Like Megan had to compete with the winless Team Papalatung, while Flush It! and Tell Them Tom Braider Sent You followed after.
Bend It was locked into a close battle in their first set with Team Papalatung, but was able to find a way to secure the 11-8 victory. With a set in hand, Bend It was loosened up for the second race to 11 points, and they wiped the court with TP, 11-4.
Having already won the battle, Bend It Like Megan received a broom from housekeeping and completed the sweep of Team Papalatung by taking the third 11-6.
Bend It Like Megan returns to the sand on Thursday, Nov. 4, to battle the Dragon Flares at 7pm, while Team Papalatung has the 9pm game tonight with the Sleezy Lambleezies.
Flush It! was also living on the sweeping side of town as they made quick work of Tell Them Tom Braider Sent You in straight sets to keep pace with the marauding Bend It Like Megan. In the first set, Flush It! gave Tom Braider two thumbs down, 11-3.
The second set was a little better for the Braiders, but they were still on the losing end of the stick. The team with a lot of promise managed their highest point total of the night, and that would have been great if the sets were played up to five, but they’re not.
After the 11-5 loss in the second set, the Tom Braiders had already ceded victory to Flush It!, but that did not deter them from playing the third set. Unfortunately, the Braiders were caught up in the Flush It! eddy and lost the match 11-3.
Tell Them Tom Braider Sent You takes aim at Shoot the Winkle next Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 9pm, while Flush It! returns tonight to take on the Bill Bratzski’s at 8pm.
The Bananas had a date with Shoot The Winkle on Tuesday as well, but as their players will attest, not everyone is equipped to handle the Winkle. The first set was over as quickly as it started as Shoot The Winkle downed the Bananas 11-2, but the first set was not indicative of the struggle that was yet to occur.
The Winkles and Bananas were unable to gain an advantage in the match until the Winkles shot ahead to take the set and the match in extra points, 12-10. It was unfortunate that the final set was played after the outcome had been decided, because the Bananas edged the Winkles 9-11 to take the third and final set.
The Bananas return to the sand on Thursday, Nov. 4, when they try to peel Tell Them Tom Braider Sent You at 8pm.
In the final match of the night, the winless wonders continued their quest for a perfect season, as Machigainai! intentionally dropped their fifth consecutive match. While they still have another five matches remaining, chances are that Machigainai! can pull of the feat if they stay focused.
This time, the victims of the Machigainai! “scheme” were the Dragon Flares. The DF Flyers were caught off guard a bit, as the first set was tied 6-6, but then finally succumbed to the Machigainai! plan by winning the set 11-6.
It was all down hill from there on for the Dragon Flares, as they easily won the next two sets11-4 and 11-3 to complete the sweep.
Machigainai! continues their path to perfection tonight when they try to school the MHS Dolphins at 6pm, while the Dragon Flares are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 2 when they match up with Esemuoel at 7pm.
All the side-outs you can handle will be doled out again tonight at the PIC. If you would like further information about the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League, contact Jon, Evan, Dennis, or Nan by calling the SEA office at 235-6231 ext. 5147.
