Recovering former governor Guerrero gets a helping hand
House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial and Northern Marianas College president Antonio Deleon Guerrero recently presented former governor Larry I. Guerrero with a final check from a benefit held for him and his wife, Matilde.
Fitial and Guerrero presented the check on behalf of the Friends and Family of Larry & Ding, a group formed to raise funds for the former governor and his wife.
Guerrero had been hospitalized in the Philippines for an extended period, and the Friends and Family of Larry & Ding hosted a benefit to help defray some of his mounting medical expenses.
The benefit, which was held back in July 10, was an astonishing success, with the entire dining area of the Hyatt Regency Saipan filled to capacity.
“We are very happy to be able to assist former governor Guerrero, given the enormous contributions he has made in public service over the many years he has served us,” said Fitial.
The House Speaker also expressed appreciation to all of the volunteers and contributors behind the benefit.
Fitial, who was the Republican Party chair during Guerrero’s tenure as governor, praised the former governor for his staunch support for a strong local economy and for local self-government.
“I was very honored to work with him,” Fitial added. “He was a very good governor, a good leader, and I’m glad to see him recovering at home with his family.”
Guerrero served as the governor of the CNMI from 1990 to 1994.
