MHS All-Stars and Shag need O-kon
A season’s worth of aces, xunks, kees, jams, and goals came down to fiery match up between the Marianas High School All-Stars and Shag in the first round of the World Organized Rocball Interscholastic and Community League yesterday, and the players have yet to decide who will advance to challenge the undefeated Ghasias Brothers in the championship.
After three sets of victorious play, the MHS All-Stars were unable to juice out against Shag, as the cagey veterans were able to capitalize on the student’s mistakes in the fourth set to force O-kon today. Four sets into the first playoff game has the Dolphins ahead in points 67-58, but they will have to focus in the overtime this afternoon.
The All-Stars may have surprised a few in the Rocball world when they took the first set from Shag 17-13, but the Dolphins proved that it wasn’t a fluke when they turned up the heat to take the second 19-12.
Up 2-0 in the set count, the under-aged overachievers knew that they still had a long way to go to take down the regular season runner-ups, and after a hotly contested third set, they found themselves ahead 3-0 in the set count.
Time was flying by, and the only way that the Dolphins could wrap up the game was to win the final set—or juice out. The students were on pace to do just that, as they were ahead of Shag 14-6. Time was on their side as the bell rang to signal 10-minutes until the resumption of classes, but this battle would not be settled quite so easily.
Three times the Dolphins served with game point—three times they gave the roc back. Shag capitalized on the MHS miscues, and rallied to take the fourth set 17-15 to force a sudden death overtime match (O-kon).
The Shag have so far scored 11 aces, three xunks, and eight kees, compared to six aces, 12 kees, two goals, and a xunk.
The MHS All-Stars’ “Poundin” Pedro Iguel is the game’s leading heavy hitter contender, scoring two aces, five kees, two goals and a jam to lead his team with 20 points.
Game 1 is on the line at 12:30pm, Shag and the MHS All-Stars take the blue court inside the air-conditioned comforts of the MHS Gym in a race to 10 points or a goal. If the All-Stars win, then they take the first game in the best-of-three series. If Shag wins, they will force another O-kon to decide the game winner.
