The rich history of baseball in the CNMI and the recent success of the Little League teams have had the community lauding the efforts of the parents, players and organizers of the Saipan Major League, and it seems that the islands have also caught the attention of a former secretary of the Baseball Confederation of Oceania.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, John Ostermeyer will be meeting with SML officials to discuss a number of issues aimed at taking the local program one step further.

According to SML president Rose Igitol, Ostermeyer wrote to the organization and offered his assistance in finding ways in which to provide equipment and funding in an effort to improve the local program and to install local development officers.

“I think it’s great. We’re always open to baseball professionals coming out to help our islands,” said Igitol.

The meeting will be held this Saturday at 10am in the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, and organizers, umpires, are invited to attend, along with anyone interested in aiding the baseball program.

Rep. Ray Tebuteb, and president of the Rota Little League Crispin Ogo will be in attendance, and government officials from Saipan are more than welcome to lend a voice, a hand, and an ear.

Ostermeyer’s list of credits include four years as the secretary general of the International Baseball Federation, 10 years as the secretary general of the BCO, and eight years as the consultant executive director of the Australian Baseball Federation, to name a few.

During his two-day trip to the CNMI, Ostermeyer intends to survey the needs of the islands’ baseball programs in the area of development, as well as the level of funding required to advance the sport throughout the region.
