Shag wins first game in double O-kon
The first game of the World Organized Rocball Interscholastic and Community League playoff round between the Marianas High School All-Stars and Shag could not be fit into one session on Thursday, but a the fully rested teams returned to the “Big Blue” to settle the score yesterday afternoon.
During the fourth set, the Dolphins served with a chance to win three time—three times they gave the roc back. Shag capitalized on the MHS miscues to force a sudden death O-kon, and they won both of the races to 10 points to take the first game.
In the first O-kon, Shag cruised to an 11-6 win to force the second O-kon. Unlike the MHS All-Stars, Shag did not fail to close out the match when the Dolphins were on the ropes. The cagey veterans dropped a 10-6 bomb on the All-Stars to win the second O-kon and Game 1.
The teams began Game 2 afterward after a brief break, and Shag picked up right where they left off by winning the first set by the score of 16-9. With the clock ticking, and third period swiftly approaching, The All-Stars tried to regroup to take the second set before they returned to class.
A heated match went back and forth for several minutes before the ending up with the same result: Shag 16, All-Stars-9. The Dolphins were down 2-0, and there was just enough time to get the third set going. Before either team could get anything started, the siren rang to freeze the game at one apiece.
Game 2 resumes Monday afternoon at 12:30pm, as Shag and the MHS All-Stars take the blue court inside the air-conditioned comforts of the MHS Gym to decide who will advance to challenge the undefeated Ghasias Brothers in the championship.
If the All-Stars win, then they even up the best-of-three series at one game apiece. If Shag wins, they advance to the finals.
