After waiting for Shag and the Marianas High School All-Stars to finish the first round of the playoffs, the Ghasias Brothers were a bit rusty when they returned to action Wednesday night to beat Shag in Game 1 of the championships of the World Organized Rocball Interscholastic and Community League.

Though the schedule for the finals was to begin tonight, both teams unexpectedly showed up ready to play on hump day.

The father of Rocball, Jim Feger, wasn’t about to tell the avid players of the true sport of the islands that they couldn’t play. With all of the students long gone, the teams entered the big blue of the MHS Gymnasium seeking the title, and in the early going it was Shag who looked more the part of the champion than the undefeated Brothers.

Shag was able to eke out a win in the first set by a 20-16 margin, and they finished it off in style—with a goal. The 1-0 advantage gave Shag some room to breathe, and the second set was a bit easier for the regular season runner-ups, as Shag clipped the Brothers again, 17-10.

At the halfway point, Shag was ahead 2-0 in the set count, and 37-26 in overall points. The smell of upset was in the air, but the Ghasias Brothers had enough of playing second fiddle to the second placers. The Brothers shook the dirt off from their shoulders and schooled Shag in the third set, 17-12.

The Brothers had reeled in Shag to within six points, and they needed to win the final set by at least nine points to take the first game. That’s exactly what they did. The Brothers racked up a 15-6 victory in the fourth and final set to put an end to an evening of high-speed action.

Overall, the Shag scored three aces, six kees and a goal, compared to eight aces, 15 kees by the Ghasias Brothers.

The Brothers also had the game’s standout, as Freddy Pelisamen was named the heavy hitter, scoring three aces, three kees to lead his team in the victory with 12 points.

Game 2 of the best-of-five Rocball finals takes place tonight at 5pm in the air-conditioned comforts of the MHS Gymnasium.
