More than 50 students of the Glushko’s Academy of Performing Arts, or GAPA, are now in intensive rehearsals, making new costumes, stage decorations and props to prepare for this year’s traditional holiday performance of The Nutcracker.

Producing and choreographing the whole performance is Anna Glushko, who promises a very interesting version of The Nutcracker.

Glushko, director and teacher of GAPA, said: “We have a lot of new dances, costumes, and new performers as well. Many guest performers are working on this project with the little ballerinas.”

Students from Hopwood Junior High, Saipan International School as well as the TeenZone dance team will perform various classical dances from The Nutcracker. Saipan International School has the privilege of featuring one of their own students in the part of the Mouse King.

As always, ballet masters from Russia will take part in the performance of The Nutcracker in the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince.

Joining the Russian ballet masters is 10-year-old Dana Kurynova, a student of the Professional Ballet School of Saratov, to dance the part of Clara.

On Nov. 12, GAPA will conduct a fundraiser performance called the Ballerina Winter Ball. This is a wonderful way to spend an evening with family and friends while enjoying a live dance performance, auction, and raffle. The funds raised through the Ballerina Winter Ball will help GAPA in many ways to cover the production cost of The Nutcracker. Total proceeds from the fundraiser will be dedicated to the production of the holiday performance.

Also, GAPA is looking for gifts, goods, or any kind of donation that could be used for the fundraising auction and raffle.

The Ballerina Winter Ball will be staged at the Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe on Friday, Dec. 3, Saturday, Dec. 4, and Sunday, Dec. 5. Tickets are available at GAPA studio or at the door. All volunteers who are willing to give support or participate in the project are welcome. Call 483-6271 for more information.
