America Recycles Day…it’s not just for ‘Americans’
It looks like a lot of people are paying attention, because the ARD competition is heating up! According to the folks at the transfer station, Grace Christian Academy, Tanapag Elementary, Kagman Elementary, and Eucon International School are leading the pack. But it’s not too late! Even though it’s a government holiday, the transfer station will be open until 4:30 today. So hurry on down and recycle your cans and paper products to benefit the school of your choice. The stakes are pretty high—first place schools will receive $550, and there are second and third prizes of $450 and $350.
I recently heard a very sad story about the upcoming America Recycles Day. A haole friend of mine was encouraging a Chamorro neighbor to recycle his cans for his kid’s school after a big novena. The Chamorro said, “America Recycles Day? Yeah, well, you can do that, because you’re American.” America Recycles Day ISN’T just for Americans. It’s for anyone who cares about their environment, their island, and the place they call home. And for at least the next week, recycling is for anyone who wants to help out local schools. When we recycle our cans, bottles, paper, and plastics, we all win.
So, other than to help out our schools, why should we recycle? Why should we take the trouble during our novenas, beach picnics, birthday celebrations, or fiestas to separate out the trash? I’ll give you five good reasons:
1) Recycling conserves our valuable natural resources
2) Recycling saves energy
3) Recycling saves clean air and clean water
4) Recycling saves landfill space
5) Recycling can save money and create jobs.
And, to top it all off, you get money to recycle! DPW will pay you 20 cents per pound for your aluminum.
So get out there, folks! Collect those cans and paper products, recycle them at Lower Base, and do something good for yourself and for your environment.
