The Saipan Southern High School social studies department will host the school’s first Social Studies Fair this Tuesday, Nov. 23 at the school cafeteria, and is inviting the public to witness the event.

According to Jay Villagomez, schoolteacher and head of the department, students will have their projects on display for judging between 10:30am and 12pm.

“A lot of students are lacking interest in social studies, and the more we can promote it and generate interest from events like challenge bowls and a fair like this, it would benefit not only the students but the entire community,” he said. “The more interest it generates, the better.”

Villagomez, a former teacher at Marianas Baptist Academy, said projects were assigned throughout the semester, and results are expected to be positive.

“We did this for two years at MBA, and things went pretty smoothly. We’re looking forward to this one.”

The fair features three categories—Historical Reenactment, Three-Dimensional Maps, and Modeled Historical Buildings.

Judges include Board of Education member Dino Jones and Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Juan L. Babauta, among others.

The department consists of four other teachers. (Shan Seman)
