Braiders, Lambleezies extend streak
With a little over two weeks remaining, the race for the regular season champion is still up for grabs as the Sleezy Lambleezies (8-1) and Tell Them Tom Braider Sent You (8-2) made their case for first place, as each added another win to their record in the continuation of the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League Thursday night at the Pacific Islands Club sand court.
The Sleezy Lambleezies won their sixth straight contest to sweep the Bananas (5-6) in straight sets—11-0, 11-0, and 11-6. The SL Express has allowed the least points against in the league with 142, but Laurie Peterka knows that there is still some work to be done to finish the season atop the pack.
Led by captain Kevin Carey and company, Tell Them Tom Braider Sent You extended their winning streak to five games against the high- scoring MHS Dolphins (7-5). The under-aged overachievers have racked up a league high 331 points for, but they couldn’t outgun the Braiders, who took the first two sets 11-4 and 11-8 to clinch the best-of-three affair before dropping the final 11-6.
Also extending a winning streak were Bill Bratzski’s (4-5). The team vaulted over the idle Shoot The Winkle (4-6) into the eighth and final playoff slot with a convincing win over the fifth place Dragon Flares (7-3). Led by Faheem “The Dream” Ebrahim and Chris “Moon Ball” Nelson, the Bratzski’s won the first two sets 11-7 and 11-7 before surrendering the third to Bruce “The teammate tackler” Berline and Steve “I’m the guy he tackled” Nguyen, 11-1
A large crowd gathered in the 8pm match up between the winless wonders, as Machigainai! (1-9) and Team Papalatung (0-10) faced off in a battle in which somebody had to win. Kimiko Hasegawa and Izumi Kawakami struck fear into the TP’s with their power serves, while teammates Andrew Ortega and Ike Diopulos provided the frontline kills to seal the deal. The celebration began immediately after Machigainai! took the first two sets 11-4 and 11-9. Onlookers were nearly brought to tears as the emotional Eric O’Malley provided the finishing touches on the first win and thanked his fans and supporters.
