Rivals duke it out in indoor volleyball
The walls were shaking at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Thursday night, as two of the Rocball titans squared up in the second week of action in the 2004-2005 Island Wide Men’s and Women’s Volleyball League.
This time around there would be no kees, xunks, or goals, but Shag and the Lost Boys (Ghasias Brothers) landed plenty of aces and kills to make up for it. Shag wasted no time, as they sought revenge for their second place finish in the World Organized Rocball Interscholastic and Community League.
After securing the first set from the Lost Boyz, 25-19, Shag continued their assault upon the champs. In response to the beating, the Lost Boyz did what anyone in trouble would do—they called a Pelisamen.
Freddy Pelisamen blocked a pair of shots and laid on a kill to power the Boyz to a 25-20 comeback in the second. They carried that momentum into the third set where they sat Shag down once again, 15-9.
The women got things underway when T-8 and the Hitters rolled up their sleeves on the south court, and they only needed two sets to decide the winner.
After losing in their first outing of the season, the Hitters learned the value of winning the close games, and edged T-8 in the first set to get the 25-23 win.
The Hitters continued to drop bombs upon T-8 in the second set until they won the best of three by a score of 25-18.
In the second round of action, the Ol’ Aces took on the Monarchs, while the She Devils and Pikan Gaga settled the score.
The Aces realized that they let a golden opportunity slip through their hands last week when they took the first set against Shag, only to lose by a few points in the third. They stormed out to take the first set against the Monarchs 25-12, but found themselves in the same scenario when they dropped the second 25-20. Fueled by the four kills of Jeremy Winkfield, the Aces eked past the Monarchs in the third, 15-13, and evened their record to 1-1.
The women closed out the night’s activities when the She Devils and Pikan Gaga took the floor, but the Gaga girls needed only two sets to settle the Devils, 25-23 and 25-20.
As close as these squads played each other, it is conceivable that they will face each other in the finals.
All of the indoor action returns to the Ada Gym next Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 6:30pm when the 2004-2005 Island Wide Men’s and Women’s Volleyball League continues its search for possible players for the 2006 Micronesian Games in Chuuk.
