Defending champs debut strong
Defending champion Ol’Aces led the cast of first day winners in the basketball competition of the 3rd Annual Pacific Rim Youth Goodwill Tournament that kicked off Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Matched up against CK Saints in the fourth match of opening day, Ol’Aces got 27 points from former national player Jeremy Winkfield as they won in a route 104-58.
The defending champs jumped to a 25-11 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The 17 markers of 2004 Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League regular season and championship MVP, Paul Magcalas, and the 15 of do-it-all swingman Dan Barcinas supported Winkfield.
Luis Reyes paced the Saints’ losing cause with 28, while comebacking Christian Villacrusis added 14.
The fifth and final game of the day saw Tinian’s 14-and-under squad maul an inexperienced Garapan Rollers III team, 104-29. CJ Hofschneider paced five Tinian players in double figures with 22, while Jess Sison and Chris Macabugao logged in 10 apiece for G-Rollers III.
