At least 116 earthquakes shook several portions of Asia in about a week after the 9.0-strong quake that triggered tsunamis that have claimed nearly 150,000 lives in several Asian and African countries.

The United States Geological Survey recorded a 6.5-quake located off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia Saturday afternoon—the strongest aftershock on the island after the 9.0-strong tremor a day after Christmas Day.

However, a stronger earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook the Nicobar islands, India earlier on Dec. 26—the second strongest in Asia so far in the series of tremors following the record-breaking quake. Yesterday, the USGS also recorded a 5.9-quake on the Nicobar islands.

The USGS recorded at least 116 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 4.4 to 7.1 in portions of Asia following the 9.0-strong quake, most of which were allocated in the Indian region.

Based on USGS records, at least 65 quakes were recorded in India 46, Indonesia; 6, Japan; 2, the Philippines; and 1, Myanmar.

The strongest quake in Japan in the past week had an intensity of 5.7 and was located on Ryuku Islands Wednesday. In the Philippines, a 4.6-strong quake jolted Luzon Tuesday, which followed an intensity 5.8-tremor in Mindanao Monday. Myanmar experienced a 5.0-strong earthquake Thursday.

The USGS reported no earthquake in the Northern Marianas after the 4.5-strong quake that struck Rota last Dec. 22.
