Citing low tourist arrivals on Rota, the Marianas Public Lands Authority has reduced the beach concession fee on the island from $100 to $25.

In a meeting yesterday, the MPLA management reported that the beach concessionaire barely profits from its operations because of the lack of tourists and high operating expenses.

The management added that not only is the Rota beach shorter than the beaches on Saipan and Tinian, the rocky sea floor does not allow for marine activities such as jet-skiing or banana boat riding.

As a result, the concessionaire is limited to renting beach mats and umbrellas, among other things, MPLA said.

The MPLA board of directors agreed to lower the concession fee to $25.

The amount will remain in effect for a year and a half, after which the MPLA board will review the situation of the Rota tourism industry and the concessionaire’s financial status.

The board said it may reinstate the $100 fee if the economy improves.
