Hunter slips with Seahawks, Barry rises with Rams
After an exciting season of action in the National Football League came to a close two weeks ago, the mood of gridiron aficionado’s across the country was as mixed as the cultures of our great country. There was joy in half of the cities that play host to NFL teams throughout the 16 game schedule, for their homegrown representatives had lived to fight another day. For the other half of NFL host cities, there was a combination of disappointment and anticipation. In towns like Buffalo and Charlotte—whose teams came oh so close to the postseason—there are thoughts of what might have been, while in San Francisco and Miami, the fanatic faithful of the 49ers and the Dolphins are looking forward to the top two selections in the 2005 NFL Draft, respectively.
Last week, a few more teams were added to each list, as the N.Y. Jets, St. Louis Rams, Indianapolis Colts, and Minnesota Vikings advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs, and the Seattle Seahawks, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, and Green Bay Packers made reservations at the King Fisher Golf Course.
While our local prognosticators were just about split in picking the Seahawks over the Rams, six were correct in picking the Mike Martz army. Several experts were thrown for a loop last week when the N.Y. Jets flew into San Diego and unplugged the Chargers, but Jennifer and Cassie seemed to have some inside information that helped them to make the right call.
All in all, the picks were incredibly close last week, with all of the prognosticators favoring the Colts and the Packers. While everyone smiled when Peyton Manning de-shoed the Broncos defense, and the same group took it on the chin when Brett Favre failed to win a big playoff game at home for the second year in a row.
It seems that the new blood is making waves throughout the league, and it has made it all the way to Saipan. Will and John tallied a 1-3 record in the first round of the playoffs, but all of the newbies kept pace with Jennifer, Big Tuna and Rich with identical 2-2 marks.
This time out, there stands to be a number of changes, as there is at least one maverick pick for every game.
