The U.S. District Court yesterday sentenced two drug peddlers to six-and-a-half years imprisonment.

Chief Judge Alex R. Munson imposed the sentence on Xu Yu Yao and Chen Bing Shu.

The court convicted Xu on illegal drug distribution and conspiracy charges; Chen had pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge, in connection with offenses committed last June 2004.

The judge meted out 78-month prison terms for each count. For the prison terms pertaining to the two counts against Xu, the judge ordered that they be served concurrently, which means that Xu would only serve 78 months in prison. The judge gave the defendants credit for the time they had already spent in jail.

The judge imposed four and three years of supervised release on Xu, but both would run concurrently. The defendant, however, would have to undergo deportation proceedings as a condition for the supervised release.

Munson also tasked Xu to perform 300 hours of community service during his supervised release after fully serving his prison term. As for Chen, the judge tasked him to perform 200 hours of community service during his supervised release.
