The Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association delivered its first shipment of clothing to be converted to cash for the victims of the recent tsunami disaster throughout many Asian countries.

SGMA contacted Ruth Coleman, the deputy director of the Veteran’s Affairs Office, to expedite delivery of cases of men’s, ladies’ and children’s clothing to the Veteran of Foreign Wars Office for rummage sales to convert hard goods into cash for transfer to disaster care groups associated with the delivery of relief support to the victims.

“We heard of the VFW’s Saturday rummage sales to gather contributions, and we knew it would be expensive to send clothing to the victims themselves, so we got together with Ruth Coleman to utilize the work already ongoing by those two honorable groups,” said SGMA’s Chairman James C. Lin.

Lin gave credit to Kidong Choi of RIFU Corp., and H.K. Min of Sako Corp. for the original initiative, and also thanked the factories that have begun to contribute what can be converted into thousands of dollars for those in need in the ravaged Asian areas hit by the devastating waves of the tsunami.

So far contributing are RIFU Apparel, Marianas Fashion, Inc., Winners I, Winners II, Joo Ang Apparel and United International Corp. SGMA plans to deliver these clothing-to-cash contributions as long as the factories keep delivering them to SGMA.

SGMA is comprised of the 26 operating factories on Saipan.
