Experienced mountain-bikers needed
With the recent rise in the popularity in the sport of triathlon, the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation has been doing whatever is needed to accommodate the new crop of multi-sport hopefuls.
Following the completion of the third event of the Enticer Series, the organization has readied a graduating class of aspiring triathletes for the 6th Annual Tinian Turquoise Blue Triathlon next month—but they are not finished there.
Later in February, the NMITF will be hosting a mountain bike race, followed by the ORAXTERE in March. In order to get the road racers prepared for the rigors of an off-road race, the NMITF is planning to offer beginner courses in mountain bike operation within the week.
According to the race director of the Enticer Series, Sue Knecht, the only thing holding them back from offering “Extreme Riding 101” is the scheduling of volunteers for the course.
“We have a lot of nervous newbies going for either XTERRA or XTERRA Sport this year, and I want to help them out because I felt exactly the same way last year. We have not done any off-road Enticer stuff, so we are hoping for volunteers to help clear some trail section on Wireless Road next weekend,” said Knecht.
Knecht hosted a very easy trail ride this evening from the pool in Marpi, to Banzai Cliff, Cow Town, Grotto, Bird Island Lookout, the Firing Range, to the top of Radar Road and finally back to the pool. The ride was open to anyone who wanted to capitalize upon the knowledge, skills and experience of some of the veteran local riders. Knecht doesn’t plan on this being the last ride available for the new riders, as she called for a big response from the local bikers.
“Veterans unite! I am looking for a few good volunteer riders to host one approximately hour-long ride every Tuesday or Thursday night leading up to an informal, short race on Saturday, Feb. 26, and the ORAXTERE on March 6.”
If you would like to volunteer, you will be asked to select the date, set the course, be the teacher, and contact Knecht with your intentions via email at sueknecht1@yahoo.com
