The third place Verizon Sluggers of the Island Wide Fast pitch Softball League were all set to notch another win in their belts on Thursday night as one by one their players made their way to the softball field at the Oleai Sports Complex, and few gave the Islanders much of a chance to do anything to stop a loss termed as inevitable-but that’s exactly what happened.

Trailing 12-7 in the bottom of the fifth, the Islanders (4-9) rallied to score five runs to tie the Sluggers (7-7) by capitalizing on pitching miscues and clutch hitting in the form of a huge grand slam homerun from Reno Celis.

After halting the Sluggers to zero runs again in the top of the sixth inning, the Islanders scored three more times to take the15-12 lead off of some quality hitting, heads up base running, and some lackluster fielding.

Though the Sluggers managed to score a run in the top of the seventh inning, they weren’t able to call up any additional offense, and found themselves walking away from the ballpark with a .500 record.

Right fielder Jeff Camacho had a stellar night for the Islanders, as the crafty veteran reached base four consecutive times on bunts, and finished the night 4-for-5 with two scores, while teammate Celis hit for the cycle. Celis went 4-for-5 with a single, a double, a triple, and a grand slam homerun, and finished with five runs batted in.

The Islanders still have a pair of games remaining on the schedule, while the Sluggers and the D-9ers (10-3) have one. The high-speed action of the Island Wide Fast pitch Softball League continues next Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7pm.
