The Department of Public Safety has finalized its sobriety checkpoint schedule for Super Bowl weekend.

The DPS Traffic Section announced Friday that its first batch of sobriety checkpoints, each lasting about 75 minutes, would be held on Feb. 4, with the first set up on Beach Road Susupe in front of the Minachom Atdao Pavilion. The checkpoint begins at 8:30pm and concludes at 9:45pm.

A second set up will be on 2W Highway Garapan by Highway Market from 11pm to 12:15am.

Two checkpoints would also be conducted on Super Bowl day, with the first set up on Beach Road Chalan Piao by Hopwood Junior High School. The set up begins at 12:30pm and is scheduled for termination at 1:45pm.

A second set up will be on 2W Highway Chalan Lau Lau by Verizon, beginning at 2pm and concluding at 3:15pm.

DPS explained that the activity is part of the department’s efforts to deter, detect, and ensure that all vehicle occupants are protected

In addition to the mentioned checkpoints, traffic officers will be conducting highway criminal interdictions, saturation patrols, aggressive driver interdictions, and laser activities.

Earlier, DPS commissioner Santiago Tudela said because of the popularity of the National Football League’s Super Bowl, checkpoints would be conducted as a deterrent to impaired driving.

“A lot of government employees don’t go to work, school is close…they start drinking at about 9am and leave establishments at 2pm or 3:30pm,” he said. “So I’m planning on putting out a sobriety checkpoint on Super Bowl day.”
