Showiness instead of safety?

This is with reference to the news about Saipan getting new “retroreflective” road signs.

Wow! “Retroreflective” yet! Well, isn’t that SPECIAL! How impressive! It’s so nice to have a sign to let me know I’ve traveled a full mile on As Perdido Road or that I’m driving on Road 302 instead of on Road 304 (whatever that actually means).

Now, how about replacing the numerous STOP signs and other REAL safety signs that are faded or defaced to the point of being indiscernible, indistinguishable or invisible at intersections and crossroads around the island? Naw. That’s too much to ask. Let’s opt for “showiness” and “beautification” over safety any day. It’s the island way!

Oh, and what about encouraging our fine local “cops” to take real action for a change by cracking down on the ubiquitous scofflaws who routinely run red lights and stop signs all over the island? And let’s require these same uniformed public servants to obey the stop signs and stop lights consistently themselves. Yes, the police should come to full stops at marked corners, too, even though that’s apparently a novel idea in these parts! (In memory of the many souls who have lost their lives due to many causes on our local roads.)
