A man is facing criminal charges for alleged sadistic sexual and physical abuse of his wife and for allegedly threatening to rape the woman’s two kids. He also allegedly threatened to kill her and several persons, including Superior Court judge Kenneth Govendo.

In one instance, 58-year-old Juan DeLeon Guerrero Manalo allegedly poked the woman’s eyes with his fingers and threatened to pluck them out. In other instances, Manalo allegedly forcibly inserted a foreign material into her private parts. Police detective Andrea Z. Ozawa stated these allegations against Manalo in a sworn statement submitted to the court.

During a bail hearing held yesterday at the sala of presiding judge Robert Naraja, the woman burst into tears as she recalled on the witness stand the alleged brutal treatment she got from her husband, whom she accused of beating her up several times.

“He was pulling my eyes,” the woman said of her husband in one instance when Manalo came home drunk sometime last November.

The woman struggled, but she sustained a black eye and an injury on her mouth, the detective said.

“Three times in December last year, about one week apart each time, the victim’s husband forced Portuguese sausage into her [private part] even though she was crying,” the detective said.

Based on Ozawa’s investigation, Manalo would allegedly force the woman to have sex with him, while asking her how she likes having sex with other people of both genders.

Two days before Christmas last year, Manalo allegedly asked the woman to have sex with him in front of her supervisor. He then drove their car to a beach side and asked the woman to get out from the car; Manalo then grabbed her and held a machete against her neck when she refused, causing her neck to bleed and swell. The detective said their two-year-old son witnessed the incident.

“The victim is worried for her children, including her two daughters, age 11 and 13, because her husband has threatened to rape their two daughters if she leaves him. She is also worried for her son because he knows how to masturbate already because her son learned the behavior from her husband,” the detective said.

The woman told police that Manalo had been accusing her of having an illicit affair, which she said she never did. Manalo would frequently park his car by the bushes in front of a school where the woman works, stalking her while she was at work.

Manalo had also allegedly threatened to kill the woman and six other persons, including her supervisor and the latter’s relatives, as well as Judge Govendo. Govendo had earlier issued a temporary restraining order that compelled Manalo to stay away from the woman, but the order was later modified to allow the couple to live again together after the conduct of review hearings. Manalo allegedly declared that, after killing her, Govendo, and other persons, he would also kill himself.

CNMI chief prosecutor David Hutton and assistant attorney general John Eaton said they would file the criminal information against Manalo by Friday. Police lodged multiple charges of assault and battery, stalking, and disturbing the peace against Manalo.

Judge Naraja imposed a $100,000 bail for Manalo’s temporary release and directed the defendant to stay away at least 100 yards away from the woman’s places of work and the schools where the daughters are studying.

However, Naraja said Manalo could only be released after surrendering his two rifles to authorities should the defendant be able to post bail. Authorities have already taken custody of Manalo’s pistol.
