The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library and the Library Friends have teamed up to successfully receive a three-year grant from the Administration for Native Americans—the first time the library will receive this type of funding since being established on Dec. 21, 1991, 14 years ago.

“The CNMI Indigenous Chamorro and Refaluwasch children and families stand to benefit with the establishment of a center for the preservation and teaching of indigenous cultures and languages,” said Maureen Sebangiol, president of the Library Friends.

Sebangiol also announced yesterday the appointment to Dr. Elizabeth Rechebei of EDR Consulting as the project director.

According to library director Kevin Latham, the existing conference room will be transformed into a Children’s Library and Cultural Center. The library will collect books and printed items, audiovisual and other non-print materials about Chamorro and Refaluwasch culture, language, and history.

Children’s librarian Janice Sablan said that the “development of the existing library collection is an essential element of the project.”

The Library Friends also hope to build a strong collection of children’s materials in the native languages.

Upon completion of the renovations, the new library will house cultural and literacy programming for children and families. By the year 2006, the Center will be opened for the community’s participation in the production of creative programs and performances. Family-oriented programming that helps teach and transfer indigenous cultures to the next generation such as readings and performances in the native languages, fine art exhibits and/or instruction, dance, musical recitals, educational classes, lectures, oral history projects, among others will be encouraged.

The Library Friends is interested in projects and materials on a wide variety of subjects and many different types of media.

“So, if you want your materials added to our new collection and that you would like to participate in family oriented programs, please come in or call us. We are located across from the World Resort and North of the Joeten Shopping Center in Susupe. Please remember that we are your friends promoting literacy,” said Sebangiol.
