Workers at the construction site at the American Memorial Park yesterday unearthed live vintage ordnance, increasing the number of explosives found at the site to nearly 100.

The Department of Public Safety’s Explosives Response Team rushed to the site yesterday afternoon to take custody of the ordnance and place it inside the ordnance storage in Marpi.

XRT’s Regino Celes took the three pieces of 100mm Japanese projectiles, a type of World War II munition, from the site. The explosives had a diameter and length of about 5 and 15 inches, respectively, according to DPS spokesperson Eric David.

The number of live ordnance that had been found at the park since construction work began has reached about 95, according to David.

“At one time, we discovered 20 pieces,” narrated Noel Daca, a construction foreman.

David said no explosion has happened so far since construction work at the park began last year.

Discoveries of live vintage ordnance have been frequent on Saipan, a battleground during World War II.
