With just a couple of days remaining until the Saipan Little League Baseball Association ushers in the 2005 edition of hardball to the CNMI, coaches, managers, and league officials packed the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium to listen to some last-minute instructions from newly voted president Joe Salas.

After all of the team representatives finished handing in rosters, writing checks, and receiving receipts, they settled in to hear Salas stress the importance of following the rules.

The league president made it a point to let the managers know that their players must respect the umpires as well as their elders, and that the league will not stand for any such behavior.

“Right from the start we need to get the kids started off on the right foot,” said Salas.

Salas continued to say how much he appreciated the work of the parents and volunteers for their hard work and dedication the last couple of months to get everything ready for Saturday’s big day.

The president of the Tinian Little League Ike Aquininoc, district administrator James Ada, and assistant district administrator Mike Borja were also on hand to hear Salas speak of the importance of getting the girls league off and running.

“We need to get the players out there. If they’re not enough players on Saipan, then we’ll get them from Tinian, but it’s time we move forward and let the girls play too,” said Salas.

In 2004, the organization sent three out of a possible four teams to the mainland to compete in the Little League World Series, and they aim to do the same if not better this time out.

The action gets started this Saturday, March 5, when all of the players from all four of the leagues will gather upon Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field for the opening ceremonies at 9am. The first pitch makes its way from the mound to the plate at 10am when the Ol’ Aces take on the Fielders.
