CNMI to host film festival in April
The annual Flame Tree Arts Festival has expanded this year to include for the first time a film festival, featuring the work of local filmmakers.
“It will be exciting to finally have a local venue for the work of many professional and amateur filmmakers,” said Governor’s special assistant Galvin Guerrero, the organizer of the 2005 Flame Tree Film Festival.
Guerrero said this year’s film festival will be non-competitive but in next year’s event, which coincides with the Flame Tree Arts Festival’s 25th anniversary, “we will invite filmmakers from throughout the Pacific and Oceania to submit entries for competition.”
This year, he said that in addition to screening local films, the film festival will also feature a panel discussion of local filmmakers, published profiles or local filmmakers, published chronicles of filmmaking in the CNMI, and a reception honoring local filmmakers.
Film festival organizers are now accepting submissions for independent feature, short, and documentary films for the 2005 festival.
Guerrero said all films submitted will be screened in a special viewing room at the American Memorial Park during the Flame Tree Arts Festival, which is held from April 15 to 17.
The submission deadline is 4:30pm on April 1. Guerrero said the entry fee this year is waived. Each entry must be submitted on VHS or DVD format.
The film festival also requires that all entries must involve principals—writers, producers, directors, and or actors—who reside or have resided in the past five years in the CNMI.
Guerrero said entry content “should be sensitive to the family-oriented nature of the Flame Tree Arts Festival.
After the festival, he said, entries will be returned to the individual filmmakers.
