Car sales slide 7 percent in February
For the first time in several months, auto sales in the Northern Marianas registered a decline of over 7 percent, according to the Commonwealth Auto Dealers Association.
The CADA reported that only 110 vehicles were sold last February. The total falls nine units short to equal February 2004’s 119 total sales.
Although the decline reflected a drop in sales of about 7.56-percent, however, CADA statistics showed that the combined sales for the first two months of the year still exceed their sale figures during the same period last year.
The combined sales brought the total number of vehicles sold to 259, more than the 246 total recorded for the same period in 2004. The increase reflects a 5.28-percent growth.
Toyota remains the CNMI’s top-selling car. Last month, Toyota’s local dealer, Microl Corp., sold 42 units of the popular Japanese automobile. Microl also sold seven units of Chevrolet for a total sales of 49 vehicles—maintaining its sales leadership among local auto dealers.
Triple J Motors sold 32 vehicles, including 17 Mitsubishis and 10 Mazdas. Joeten Motors sealed 29 auto purchase deals last month, selling 17 Nissans and 10 Fords.
Before the decline in sales last month, the CNMI’s auto dealers took off to a good start in January, recording improved sales by 17.32-percent compared with their January 2004 performance.
The CADA recorded January 2005’s sales at 149, improving from January 2004’s sales of 127 vehicles. CADA reported 2004’s total sales at 1,612, registering a 27-percent growth.
