As Sako Corp. begins to shut down its operations amid a highly competitive garment industry, its former attorneys are suing the company for failure to pay for legal services.

The law firm of O’Connor Berman Dotts and Banes yesterday filed with the Superior Court a civil action to collect on unpaid service fees amounting to over $17,618.40.

Lawyer Michael Dotts said that Sako Corp. had executed a promissory note in the amount of $60,000 in favor of the law firm sometime in October 2002 for payment of legal services.

The company had mortgaged its inventory and equipment to secure the note, Dotts said.

He said that the company made payments, but there remains an outstanding balance of about $5,208.16 from the note. Dotts also said that the firm assessed Sako an additional $17,618.40 for other legal services rendered for the company.

The law firm wants the court to compel Sako to pay its debt, plus damages and interests. (John Ravelo)
