Dolly Parton’s ‘Library’ goes to Tinian
Dollywood Foundation has committed itself to providing books to all children on Tinian from birth to five years old.
Entertainer Dolly Parton started the literacy program “Imagination Library” in Tennessee, and has spread across the nation.
This time, it will be making its way to the Pacific island of Tinian, where it will be sending free books to every child every month until he/she turns five years old.
“The only cost on our part is the postage for each book,” said non-profit organization Coalition For Children in a statement.
The total cost per child per year is $30. The Coalition For Children will be the local coordinator for this project.
“We are looking for sponsors and donors towards this worthwhile project. If you wish to donate, please contact Frances H. Diaz at 433-3800 after working hours and during weekends,” the group said in a statement.
Registration will be on March 30-31, 2005 at the Tinian Youth Center. All parents are encouraged to bring in their children’s birth certificate and register during the hours of 3pm-4:30pm on those two days.
“Let’s work together to ensure that all of our children are reading at grade level as they grow,” the coalition said.
