Mwaliyas win with play down the stretch
Mwaliyas added another win to their corner courtesy of solid play down the stretch of their match against Ochobu in Friday’s World Organized Rocball High School League action at the Marianas High School Green Court.
Ochobu seemed to have control of the match, posting a 23-15 lead after the first two sets, however, Mwaliyas managed to keep their composure, pull things together, and play with poise in the final two sets to take the victory, 38-30.
Both teams took turns grabbing the advantage in the opening set, but failure to convert on a first serve by Mwaliyas, as well as an ace by Graceful Fiden enabled Ochobu to slip by with an 11-10 win.
Mwaliyas then went on a cold spell and struggled to put up points on the board in the second set.
Seeing the opposition in trouble, Ochobu went on high gear and pounded away furiously. Julius Saito ignited his squad with three straight aces from the service line, spearheading Ochobu to the comfortable 38-30 cushion with a 12-5 win.
With their backs against the wall, Mwaliyas settled down and switched to their aggressive mode. A kee from Jeremy Winkield, a xunk by Pedro Iguel, and an ace by Donald Tagabuel sparked the turn around, propelling Mwaliyas to a 12-5 win. The team trailed by just a point as the match headed into the fourth set, 27-28.
It was all Mwaliyas in the finale as they continued to find success from the service line while protecting their corner with solid defensive plays.
Ochobu, meanwhile, tried to make a push but was just not able to penetrate through the Mwaliyas defense.
Mwaliyas went on to finish the match off by juicing out with an 11-2 win.
Tagabuel finished as the game’s heavy hitter with 10 points behind two aces, two xunks, and a kee. Winkfield also had a solid outing with eight points on an ace, a xunk, and two kees.
Fiden and Saito led Ochobu with six points apiece, each posting three aces.
WOR High School League continues from 12:30pm to 1:10pm at the Green Court throughout next week.
