Manta Rays fight back, beat Ayuyus, 33-29
The Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays kept on pushing and managed to pull off an eye-popping comeback run in the fourth quarter to beat the Kagman High School Ayuyus, 33-29, during yesterday’s MISA High School Interscholastic Basketball League bout at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
After letting a slim lead slip out of their hands due to struggles on both ends of the floor, the SSHS girls put up a desperation attack, swung momentum back to their corner, and gave their fans much to cheer about behind their hustle.
The Mantas were down 18-20 heading into the fourth period before taking over.
A couple of free throws by Henny Elayda knotted the score at 20-apiece with 8:05 remaining in regulation, sparking a ridiculous 13-3 run in the next five minutes and 58 seconds.
Kagman was held scoreless the entire quarter until Mallory Conner nailed a bomb from downtown to cut the lead to 23-25 with 6:18 remaining.
The cold slump, however, would continue as they didn’t swoosh the net until Ma Janelle Guiao’s bucket with 2:07 left, but not after the Mantas built their lead to double figures courtesy of four jumpers by Joanna Omar and a basket by Nicole Rios.
Kagman kept fighting, and behind a free throw by Erralyn Reiman and a put back and free throw by Clarissa Mobel, brought the team within four points with 39.9 seconds left.
Their push, however, was not enough as the Mantas forced a crucial turnover with 13 seconds left to seal the deal.
Omar led the Mantas with a game-high 12 points, while Elayda and Jennal Mae Borja supported her with eight and seven points.
Conner, Mobel, and Reiman paced Kagman with seven points apiece.
SSHS 33—Omar 12, Elayda 8, Borja 7, Rios 4, Coleman 2.
KHS 29—Conner 7, Mobel 7, Reiman 7, Takai 6, Guiao 2.
Scoring by quarters: 6-4, 12-10, 18-20, 33-29.
