Tropical depression 02W continues to track west-northwest as of press time yesterday, moving away from the Mariana Islands, according to the Emergency Management Office and the National Weather Service in Guam.

As of 5:15pm yesterday, the two agencies disclosed that the depression was located near latitude 10.0 degrees north and longitude 142.0 degrees east.

The islands are expected to continue to experience heavy rain showers along with winds gusting as high has 35 miles per hour.

With the heavy rain showers, motorists are advised to exercise caution while driving and be alert for ponds of water, flooded streets and slippery roads and sometimes low visibilities.

Residents in low-lying areas are also advised to exercise caution due to possible flooding.

Due to the depression, EMO and NWS maintains the high surf and small craft advisories previously issued, citing that surf has reached 10 to 13 feet on east, southeast, and south facing coasts yesterday afternoon.

Strong trade winds north of tropical depression 02W will build surf along southeast facing exposures of the islands.

“Surf will remain hazardous along northeast, east, southeast and south facing exposures through at least [today],” EMO said.

Water forecasts for today feature east winds at 20 to 25 knots with seas of 10 to 11 feet.

“Although tropical storm conditions are not expected for the Marianas at this time, a watch or warning may be needed if tropical depression 02W intensifies faster than expected or takes a sudden turn to the north. …Otherwise conditions should improve by [this] afternoon as the system continues moving west away from Marianas,” the agencies said.

Due to the high risks of high and dangerous surfs and rip currents, the public is advised to avoid venturing near exposed beaches and reef lines.
