The Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research, Extension and Education Service through its Nutrition Programs will host the CNMI Nutrition Month 2005 kick-off with a variety of fun and educational booths.

The celebration begins Friday, March 4, from 12 noon until 2pm at the NMC campus Student Center, Building J.

This year marks the 5th annual CNMI Nutrition Month with the theme “Get a Taste for Nutrition.”

Participants will “get a taste for nutrition” when they visit the different exhibits showcasing healthy food choices and physical activity. The NMC CREES Nutrition Programs, such as the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and the Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program, are coordinating the event. In addition, the Department of Public Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program will be providing information on diabetes.

The CNMI Nutrition Month 2005 Kick-Off is just one component of the “Get a Taste for Nutrition” campaign throughout March. The activities encourage everyone to take the first step toward making healthful food and physical activity choices.

“Trying new foods and new physical activities can jump-start your plans for health. Personalize the Food Guide Pyramid as your roadmap toward eating a variety of foods using moderation when selecting portion sizes and balancing your choices over time. Taking the first step toward making healthful choices can be made easy if you enlist help from friends and family,” CREES said in a statement.

Every Wednesday beginning last March 9, there will be an interactive exhibit set up in front of Building G at the college. The exhibits will consist of food samples, portion sizes, weight management information, and much more.

The following is a breakdown of activities each week:

March 4- CNMI Nutrition Month 2005 Kick-Off at NMC Student Center Building J

March 9 -Variety is the spice of life.

Be adventurous when choosing foods. Most of us stick to the same 10 foods. Yet our bodies require over 36 nutrients for good health. Eating a variety of foods will ensure you consume the nutrients you need. Have you seen how much food is available at your local markets? Take advantage! Look for different flavors, textures, and colors. (NMC CREES will provide taste testing of different local foods.)

March 16 – A 2,000 and 2,500 calorie diet

What does a day’s worth of healthy eating look like? NMC CREES will provide a sample of a 2,000 calorie and 2,500 calorie menu. It’s the big picture that counts not what you eat in one meal. Look at your food intake over a day or several days. Did you eat a variety? It’s possible to enjoy all your favorite foods in moderate amounts.

March 23 – Be active!

Being active means doing things that are fun and enjoyable, not a workout routine we dread. Learn to plan activity into your life.

March 30 – Health at any weight!

Learn what it takes to be healthy at any weight. It’s all about balancing our food intake and our activity levels. Eating right and living an active lifestyle are the keys to success.
