The U.S. District Court yesterday meted out a 78-month prison term on a drug peddler who was convicted on federal criminal charges in a jury trial.

Zhu Lian Kun have to complete serving the prison term before he would be placed on supervised release for up to four years. There is no possibility of parole under federal law.

Chief judge Alex R. Munson imposed the sentence on Zhu, who was earlier convicted on three counts of distribution of methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as “ice.”

The judge imposed 78-month prison terms for conviction on each of the three counts, but he ruled that they would be served concurrently. He pegged the terms of supervised release at three years for the conviction on the first two counts, and four years for the last count.

Munson also directed Zhu to pay the cost of electronic monitoring from Jan. 23, 2004 to Dec. 8, 2004 in the amount of $484.22.

In the indictment, federal prosecutor Patrick Smith charged Zhu with peddling less than a gram of ice on Aug. 28, 2003 and some 2.5 grams the following day. He also charged Zhu with peddling some 9.7 grams of ice last Sept. 24, 2003.

In a media release, U.S. attorney Leonardo Rapadas thanked the CNMI/Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force, which investigated the case against Zhu.
