With Parent Leadership Month under its belt, the Division of Youth Services and its public and private partners have begun the task of developing an action plan to continue to build Parent Leadership in the CNMI.

“The celebration of Parent Leadership Month in February was not the end, but rather just the beginning,” said DYS Parent Education Program coordinator and Parent Leadership Month chair Felicidad Ogumoro. “Activities for the month included the Parent Leadership Conference attended by nearly 200 parents and parent leadership advocates who shared their suggestions on how to strengthen parent leadership in the community. We will now compile those ideas into a plan of action for stakeholders.”

Other upcoming activities include the production of three television talk shows featuring professionals, parents, youth, and service providers.

Parent Leadership Month was declared in conjunction with Parents Anonymous® to:

* Educate the public about this vital family strengthening and community building strategy; and

* Encourage professional, policymakers and other community members to create opportunities to partner with parents to address issues that affect children and families; and

* Raise public awareness about the important roles parents play in shaping the lives of children and families; and

* Expand opportunities for parent leaders to participate in meaningful parent leadership activities; and

* Recognize individual parent leaders whose contributions have made a positive difference to their families and communities; and

* Build successful partnership between Parent Leadership and professionals to strengthen and support families and communities.

The Division of Youth Services is a division of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. For more information, contact the DYS Parent Education Program at 670-664-2585 or parented@saipan.com.
