Music class at Tinian Elementary School would never be the same again as choir members and strings musicians would no longer have to hold their music pieces or place them on their wobbly laps.

The school’s Parent-Teacher-Students Association last week approved the purchase of 15 music stands for the recorder and music classes of parent volunteer Beverly Battaglia.

“Dånkulo na si yu’us må’åse goes out to the Tinian Elementary School Parent-Teacher-Students-Association,” said school principal Julian Hofschneider in a media release.

He said that the music stands were delivered early this week, which would now allow the students to sit on chairs while playing their instruments. He said students used to sit on the floor but with the new music stands, they would now be able to play comfortably.

Battaglia is a TES parent and a former teacher and PTSA officer. She has been an active parent volunteer, promoting music and arts to students at TES, said Hofschneider.

The music stands would help her class practice in preparation for the upcoming Flame Tree Festival on Saipan in April, during which Battaglia will bring in a 5th grade and 6th grade class to perform.

The Council of the Humanities has agreed to sponsor the students’ trip to the festival.

Hofschneider extends his appreciation to the current PTSA officers: Jude Hofschneider, president; Julie San Nicolas, vice president; Anne Shai, treasurer; and Ellen Uy, secretary. He also thanked the previous officers who were always there to support the children at TES.

Hofschneider said that another PTSA project in progress is the renovation of the TES basketball court.

Other projects funded by the PTSA in previous years were the acquisition of student lockers and air conditioning units for TES classrooms. They also provided monetary support for scholastic and athletics competitions on or off island, like the University of Guam’s Chamorro Language Competition, which happened last week where TES students reaped several awards and also the upcoming Spelling Bee competition on Guam this Saturday.
