After receiving a scare from the pennant champions of the Island Wide Volleyball League in the first set of the finals, the Bombers of Guam soldiered up to eke out the final two sets by two-points apiece to win the 15th Annual Jam Attack on Sunday afternoon at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Despite jumping out to an early lead with a stellar 25-18 first set, No Fear was unable to finish off the Guam-based Bombers, dropping the final two sets in heart breaking fashion, 25-23 and 15-13.

“We ran out of gas. We were just too tired from making our way through the losers’ bracket,” said Taula Peter of No Fear.

No Fear took the low road as a result of their opening round loss to the Bombers in their first playoff game. Three hard fought sets came down to a 15-11 clincher that sent No Fear to the losers’ bracket.

From there, the Bombers dropped ordinance on their fellow Guamanians of team Haggan, who had just clobbered the Chuukanos in three sets.

Though Haggan edged the Bombers 25-21 to start the matcg, they had the same point total turned around on them to tie the game before the Bombers took the deciding third set, 15-10.

Aside from a close call on Saturday from the Chuukanos early on in the tournament, the Bombers soared above the competition throughout the two-day affair until all of the teams picked up the pace in the playoff round.

Following the No Fear match, they rested along the sidelines as No Fear first eliminated the Chuukanos from the loser’s bracket in a two-set sweep (25-22, 25-13), and eked out a third set win over Haggan to advance to the finals.

While other local teams, such as Shag, Ol’ Aces, and NMC Proa did not fare as well as the Chuukanos and No Fear, all of them gained valuable experience playing off-island competition throughout the two-day affair.

Though the only volleyball players that will be representing the CNMI in Palau this summer for the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games will be playing on the sand, the hard-court teams of six all helped the efforts of the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association to send them.
