Its promotion of decorating Easter eggs and aligning them with eye safety was a big hit for Hardt Eye Clinic, as more than 300 entries from children four to 11 years old stormed the clinic before the deadline yesterday.

Charles Sanders, an eight-year-old from Dandan Elementary School, got the judges’ nod in the 4-8 division with his crayon rendition depicting a man taking care of his eyes while doing work.

Nine-year-old Stevielyn Muna, also from Dandan Elementary School, won in the 9-11 age group. She decorated an egg with a theme “I love to read.” Both winners took home a basket of goodies.

The awarding was held yesterday morning at the Hardt Eye Clinic along Beach Road. Dr. Don Hardt, vice president of Hardt Eye Clinic, and Agnes McGrath, marketing director, awarded the winners their in-kind prizes.

McGrath said they started the contest three weeks ago and they were surprised to see the huge response.

Hardt said the event was in line with the observation of Eye Safety Month this March. “Kids are really talented,” said Hardt who was surprised that more than 300 children from more than 20 schools on Saipan sent their entries to the clinic.

He said he was overwhelmed with the outcome and he plans to do the same next year but promised a better and bigger contest in 2006.

The panel of judges was composed of doctors and staff from the clinic. According to the judges, picking the winning entries was very difficult. But Hardt said they had to pick the best that were pertinent to practicing eye safety.

The mechanics of the contest allowed the participants to draw using their medium of choice—crayon, pastel or poster color—to describe some examples of good eye care such as carrying pointed objects, like pencils and scissors, down or keeping them in safety boxes.
