While organizers of the two biggest triathlons are busy taking care of all of the last minute detail associated with hosting the 2005 XTERRA Saipan Championship and the Tagaman, local multi-sport athletes are looking toward the community to offer their support as well—with strings attached.

Both of the premier events feature bike and run courses that will take the athletes along several roads and villages on Saipan, and the XTERRA course has racer going across private property as well.

With that in mind, organizers and racers alike are asking that pet owners keep their dogs in check come race day to prevent an accident similar to that of last year’s bike/dog collision.

Professional triathlete Jason Chalker of Australia had just finished the swim course of the Tagaman Triathlon last year and made the transition to his road bike when a dog darted out in front of him causing him to crash and forego the remainder of the race.

While the dog escaped without serious injury, Chalker picked himself off of Beach Road with a few bumps and bruises.

Home owners who have allowed the XTERRA course to pass through their property are also being asked to tie up their animals in order that local participants can practice before the big race that is less than two weeks away.
