The San Antonio 69ers showed their depth and kept their perfect record intact after traveling to the north side of the island and beating host Tanapag Young Warriors, 61-46, as the 2005 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League resumed last night.

Making the win even sweeter was cagebelle Roxanne Duenas, who proved she belonged in the mix by knocking down six field goals for 12 points to lead the 69ers at the Tanapag Basketball Court.

The 69ers entered the match with their game faces on and put on a show with Chris and Matt Duenas going off for six and four points to spearhead a 14-6 run in the first eight minutes of play.

The Warriors, however, returned the favor in the second period and managed to pull even with a 14-6 run of their own.

Ike Aldan caught fire and tormented the opposition for six points while cagebelle Agatha Repeki made her presence felt by working hard for four points to lead the Young Warriors back in contention. Aldan, Repeki, and company finally rested at halftime with the match all tied up at 20 points apiece.

Both teams continued to pour in the points as the bout resumed, but it was the 69ers’ Roxanne Duenas who stole the show, going berserk and burning the net for eight markers and earning applause and cheers from the Afetnas fans.

Aldan also pumped in eight points to his corner, but the Warriors were outscored, 21-16, resulting in the 69ers holding a five-point breathing room with one period remaining in regulation, 41-36.

Repeki did all she could in the dying minutes, adding another six points but it wasn’t enough as 69ers coach Ray Duenas inserted his regular starting lineup, which limited the Warriors to just 10 points while lighting up the scoreboard for 20 points.

Chris Duenas and Eon Benavente also finished with solid numbers for the 69ers, sizzling for 10 and eight points.

Aldan led all scorers with 14 points, while Repeki and Jerome Mira contributed 10 and six points, respectively.

With the win, the 69ers sit alone atop the team standings with a 3-0 record. The loss, meanwhile, leveled the Young Warriors’ record at 1-1.

Currently on the tail of the 69ers are the San Antonio Sixers I (2-1). Other teams competing in the league include defending champion G-Rollers (1-1), Hopwood Junior High School (1-1), Matansa Sparks (1-2), Kagman, and Sixers II (0-3).
