Still no games, as scoreboard still out
The scoreboard at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium is in need of repairs.
According to Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Invitational Co-ed Basketball League commissioner Abner Venus, the scoreboard remains inoperable despite technicians working on it round the clock the past two days, forcing him to call off last night’s games.
“We’re paying the guys to fix it the whole day [Wednesday] and [yesterday] but no chance man…there’s a part there that needs to be replaced and I’m going to cancel all the games [last night],” he said.
Venus said the technicians spent hours trying to get the scoreboard working again, however, they reported back to him that it would not be possible without replacing the part.
Venus said games scheduled for next week in the Mobil league would be played pending the availability of a portable scoreboard.
“If we can get that, then there will be games,” he said. “It depends on Eli [Rangamar] if he can get us that.”
Earlier, Division of Sports and Recreation staff Joe Lizama said the scoreboard has been inoperable since Monday. He said power was going to the scoreboard, however, it just wouldn’t turn on.
The scoreboard is also used for the BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League. Rangamar said earlier that the games scheduled for tonight and tomorrow will go on as planned, using other resources.
Mobil games originally scheduled for last night pitted McDonald’s against Microl-Toyota at 6:30pm and Hyatt Regency Saipan versus Commonwealth Ports Authority at 8pm.
If all goes as Venus hopes, the league will finally resume on Tuesday, April 5, with Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach taking on host Mobil Oil Marianas at 6:30pm and Microl-Toyota playing the CNMI Women’s National Team at 8pm.
No action has been witnessed for over a week now, with the league observing Holy Week last week and games this week postponed due to the scoreboard malfunction.
