Let the man do his job

I know for a fact that the goal of every elected politician—whether in the CNMI, the United States, or some foreign country—is for the betterment of their homes, our homes and our people. Although I know that sometimes some of those people’s goals are corrupt and immoral, it is the people’s choice and determination to get them out. We, the voters, have the power to do that. We cannot blame anyone for the downfall of our government but ourselves.

I have noticed these past months that there has been a developing animosity between the Tinian mayor and what seems to be the rest of the CNMI. Personally, I don’t see the need for this. For many years, I believe that from the birth of our government, there have been many corrupt people elected to office here in the CNMI. No one has spoken out when they were unjust. It seems, however, that the only reason that the Tinian mayor is being attacked this time is for personal matters, and not government concerns.

I believe that a person should be hired for their credentials and their abilities, not merely because of blood relations, but one thing we must all realize is that almost every Chamorro in the CNMI is related through blood and, fortunately in some cases, those people have credentials and abilities relating to the job at hand. I have known of people being hired (both blood related and not) who have been incompetent in their jobs. Nothing was done to correct those situations and now that the mayor of Tinian has done so, he has been attacked. So please, let the mayor of Tinian do what he feels is right for his people. Let him find ways to improve Tinian. Likewise, let the mayor of Rota and the mayor of Saipan do what they feels should be done to better their respective people. Remember, we are separate islands, but with one people, one culture, and one heart. Let us all work together with the Governor to improve our CNMI.
